Bitkom: BIM software only used by just under one fifth

September 19, 2025. A central location for the planning, construction and operation of a building, where information from various project teams is brought together and which will still provide reliable information about the materials used a hundred years from now – this is made possible in the construction industry by Building Information Modeling software, or BIM for short. This type of software creates a digital model of the building, but is currently only used by around one sixth of companies in the construction and finishing industry (18%). 13 percent of these companies are planning to use BIM at least in the future. These are the results of a representative study commissioned by the digital association Bitkom, for which 504 trade companies in Germany were surveyed, including 265 from the construction and finishing trades.

“The German construction industry urgently needs to catch up when it comes to using BIM. At the moment, benefits such as increased efficiency, cost savings, error avoidance and the achievement of sustainability goals are simply being left behind,” says Nastassja Hofmann, expert for trade and construction at Bitkom.

The low level of use is mainly due to a lack of engagement on the part of companies: almost two thirds state that they have not yet engaged with BIM sufficiently or even at all (63 percent). Accordingly, hardly any companies have consciously decided against using BIM software (2 percent). However, companies in the construction and finishing trade also fear a downside with regard to BIM, as 45% see the risk of excessive monitoring in the construction industry as a consequence. Nevertheless, the opportunity perspective prevails: over half of the companies recognize great potential for the construction industry in BIM (56%). “Construction companies must now develop clear strategies for the introduction of BIM in new construction. In the long term, however, the key lies above all in making digital twins the standard for existing buildings as well,” says Hofmann.

Note on methodology

The data is based on a survey conducted by Bitkom Research on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. This involved a telephone survey of 504 craft businesses with 1 or more employees in Germany, including 265 from the construction and finishing trades. The survey took place in the period from week 23 to week 29 2025. The survey is representative. The questions were: “Do you use or plan to use BIM software in your company?” and “Which of the following statements about digitalization and digital applications apply to your company or in your opinion?”. In your opinion?”.
