Bitkom: 3 out of 5 Germans want to learn more about artificial intelligence

June 18, 2025. As an assistant at work, as a chatbot in customer service or for automatic translations in social media – not only is the use of artificial intelligence in business and society increasing massively, Germans’ interest in AI is also growing strongly. Three out of five Germans (60 percent) would now like to learn more about AI. A year ago, this figure was only 49 percent. Younger people are particularly eager to learn: Among 16 to 29-year-olds, as many as 70 percent want to expand their knowledge of AI. But even in the 65 to 74 age group, the figure is still more than half at 53%, and there is also a high level of interest among those aged 75 and over at 39%. These are the results of a representative survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom among 1,003 people in Germany aged 16 and over.

“It is important that everyone can understand and use digital technologies such as AI, regardless of age or previous knowledge,” says Bitkom President Dr. Ralf Wintergerst. “Low-threshold offers are needed to strengthen digital participation across the breadth of German society.” This is where the Digital Day, in which Bitkom is involved as a partner, comes in. It is taking place for the sixth time this year and comprises more than 2,000 activities across Germany. With offers such as robotics workshops, guided tours of data centers or discussions about social media, digitalization is explained and made tangible.

The majority of Germans believe that AI opens up opportunities for more participation in the digital world: 57% of Germans are convinced that AI makes complex information easier to understand. 49% say that AI enables easy access to digital technologies. Around a quarter (24%) even believe that AI can help to create a better and fairer world. Wintergerst: “AI can help more people to find their way in the digital world – for example, by helping them to operate devices or by simplifying content and explaining complex issues in understandable language.” However, there are also downsides: 52% of Germans say that AI disempowers people. And around half (49%) are also concerned that existing prejudices could be learned by AI systems and people could be discriminated against as a result.

The Digital Day is backed by the “Digital for All” initiative – a broad alliance of more than 25 organizations from civil society, culture, science, business, welfare and the public sector. From app development and AI in everyday family life to legal aspects for companies – you can find an overview of the Digital Day activities specifically on the topic of artificial intelligence here: digitaltag.eu/fokusthema-ki.
