With its new high-tech agenda, the German government is strategically strengthening Germany’s expertise in chip design. Its aim is to secure the technological sovereignty of Germany and Europe. There is a particular need for action in the area of central platform chips, i.e. the “electronic brain” of modern devices.
With the combined experience of its researchers from over twenty years of cutting-edge research in Dresden, the Barkhausen Institute (BI) is contributing its expertise to the establishment of a national competence center for chip design (CCCD). Together with partners such as CHIPS.NRW – Cluster for Chip Design, the Bavarian Chip Design Center (BCDC) and Chips JU, the BI wants to contribute to strengthening the development capability for central chip technologies in Germany independently and sustainably.
“Those who develop platform chips themselves not only ensure technological sovereignty, but also confidence in their own systems,” says Prof. Gerhard Fettweis, Scientific Director of the Barkhausen Institute. “Dresden has been known for decades for excellence in the production of microelectronics. But it is also a nucleus of well over a dozen start-ups and many major activities in large-scale industry in chip design. We now want to transfer this strength into a new generation of chip design – open, trustworthy and made in Germany.”
The project shows: With the Barkhausen Institute and its partners, Germany can set new standards in chip design and act with sustainable sovereignty.
