“This award is a special recognition for me – it underlines how important trustworthy technologies are for our networked society. Trustworthiness is not a technical extra, but a prerequisite. This award encourages me to continue on this path in research,” said Gerhard Fettweis ahead of the award ceremony.

As a pioneer of mobile communication, Gerhard Fettweis has been shaping the development of mobile communication standards for decades – from 3G to the future generation 6G. In his research, he has succeeded in bridging the gap between in-depth basic research and concrete applications that are already influencing our everyday lives today. His ideas such as the “Tactile Internet” or “Joint Communications and Sensing” have long been among the central concepts of the communication technology of the future.

The Barkhausen Institute (BI) also bears his signature: As a founding father, Gerhard Fettweis conceived and helped establish the independent research institute in Dresden. Under his scientific leadership, the BI has developed into a place where new approaches for trustworthy technologies in the fields of microelectronics, system architecture and mobile communications are created – with a clear focus on social relevance, security and transparency. Research is closely intertwined with social responsibility and the aim of making technology explainable and usable.

As the initiator and mentor of numerous spin-offs, Gerhard Fettweis is a central figure in technology transfer. His impulses reach far beyond research – into business, politics and society. For example, he advises the German government on the expansion of digital infrastructure, is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and was inducted into the prestigious US National Academy of Engineering in 2024.

These extraordinary achievements are now being honored in a special way with the Pioneer Award. We at the Barkhausen Institute offer our warmest congratulations and are delighted that our scientific director has been honored.
