Barkhausen Institut: Barkhausen Institute expands research with new “Secure Digital Systems” group

July 15, 2025. With the founding of the new Secure Digital Systems (SDS) research group, the Barkhausen Institute (BI) is taking another important step in the implementation of its long-term research strategy. The focus is on the consistent expansion of the research focus to include the security of digital technologies – from classic computer systems to AI-based applications. The group is headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Elif Bilge Kavun, who is also taking over the newly created professorship for Secure Digital Systems at TU Dresden.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Elif Bilge Kavun takes over group leadership at BI and professorship at TU Dresden

“I am delighted to be able to help shape this new field of research at the Barkhausen Institute and TU Dresden,” says Prof. Kavun. “Security must be an integral part of digital systems from the outset – regardless of whether they are conventional or intelligent technologies. My goal is to develop holistic, practical solutions that protect the technologies we increasingly rely on and keep them trustworthy in the long term. It is an exciting task to contribute to a field of research that is closely linked to the strategic goals of both institutions.”

With the SDS research group, the BI is strengthening its commitment to the trustworthiness and sovereignty of digital technologies that underpin our modern infrastructure. The group investigates various ways of attacking digital systems – from physical signals that unintentionally reveal information to implementation errors. It develops cryptographic methods and hardware solutions that reliably secure systems even under hostile conditions or in security-critical applications. The aim is to increase the security, reliability and resilience of technologies that have long since become an integral part of our everyday lives – for example in medical care, critical public infrastructure and smart homes.

“We warmly welcome Prof. Kavun to the Barkhausen Institute and the TU Dresden,” explains Prof. Gerhard Fettweis, Scientific Director and Managing Director of the Barkhausen Institute. “With her outstanding expertise in the security of new digital systems, she strengthens our research profile in an area that is crucial for the future. Her appointment is an important step towards our vision of trustworthy digital technologies. At the same time, she deepens the close cooperation between the BI and TU Dresden.”

Prof. Kavun moves to the BI from the Chair of Secure Intelligent Systems at the University of Passau. She previously conducted research and worked at the University of Sheffield, Infineon Technologies and the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security (HGI) at Ruhr University Bochum.

At BI, she will focus on security-critical applications in real systems, bridging the gap between theoretical research and practical implementation. Her work includes secure hardware architectures, resource-efficient cryptography, fault tolerance and the protection of AI-based systems against internal and external manipulation – always with the aim of ensuring trustworthy system behavior even under adverse conditions.

The joint appointment underlines the close cooperation between the Barkhausen Institute and TU Dresden. It exemplifies the Institute’s mission to promote research that strengthens technological sovereignty, trustworthiness, open innovation and public trust.
