Industry with slight increase in sales, cyber resilience gaining in importance
The AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement surveyed its members on economic development in 2025. The results show a moderate recovery in the industry following the previous year’s decline in sales. In addition, topics such as cyber resilience and sustainable competitiveness are moving more into focus.
Moderate upward trend at the end of 2025
Companies in the sensor and measurement technology sector achieved a one percent increase in turnover in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to the previous quarter (Q3 2025). Compared to the same quarter of the previous year (Q4 2024), turnover rose by 11%. The economic situation of AMA members thus strengthened moderately towards the end of the year.
Incoming orders developed slightly positively with an increase of two percent. The ratio of incoming orders to sales (book-to-bill ratio) was 0.96, which signals restrained but steady demand. Short-time working played virtually no role in the fourth quarter, a positive signal for the employment situation in the industry.
Export share and European markets
The industry’s export share was 50% in 2025. 31% of this was accounted for by exports within Europe, which remains a key sales region. Many companies are currently focusing on consolidating existing markets and expanding new partnerships.
Special question: India in the focus of international expansion
In the context of the ongoing negotiations on a free trade agreement between the European Union and India, the strategic relevance of the Indian market for the industry was surveyed for the first time. The results show a differentiated picture: just under half of the AMA members surveyed (48%) are planning to expand existing activities in India. A further 19 percent are considering entering the market or expanding their involvement, while around a quarter of companies currently see no specific need for action.
This means that India is becoming increasingly important for many sensor and measurement technology companies. At the same time, the assessment is carried out with a sense of proportion, as trade and regulatory framework conditions will play a decisive role in future investment decisions.
Special question: Preparation for the Cyber Resilience Act
In an additional question, the preparation for the EU Cyber Resilience Act was surveyed for the first time. 31 percent of the companies surveyed stated that they were already well prepared. A further third (33 percent) are in the planning phase, while the same number have not yet implemented any concrete measures. The answers make it clear that the industry is increasingly recognizing the importance of regulatory requirements, but implementation is still under construction in many cases.
Outlook to 2026
“The sensor and measurement technology industry has developed moderately in 2025,” says Philipp Gutmann, Managing Director of the AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement. “Many member companies are showing cautious confidence and are working to prepare for the upcoming regulatory and technological challenges. The focus is clearly on reliability, innovation and a gradual strengthening of cyber resilience.”
