Barkhausen Institute: Student internship at BI – particulate matter sensors in use

August 21, 2025. Three seventh-graders from Manos High School in Dresden were guests at the Barkhausen Institute for a project week. There, they immersed themselves in the research field of particulate matter sensors. They learned how such sensors measure, which factors influence the values and what they say about air quality. The students also gained insights into various scientific fields and were able to experience the everyday life of researchers at first hand.

The trainees first learned how a particulate matter sensor works: How does such a sensor measure? What values can be expected? And what do the measurement results mean? Once the sensor had been electronically wired and programmed, the students carried out a series of measurements at various locations in Dresden. We then compared the results with their expectations and discussed them.

At the end of the week, particulate matter expert Dr. Sven LiĂźner from the Chair of Traffic Ecology at TU Dresden answered any unanswered questions and provided further background information on particulate matter formation and measurement.

The students agreed that the week was exciting and informative and gave them interesting insights into scientific work.
