Simulation of electron and ion beams in rarefied gases

With the help of the open-source plasma simulation software PICLas, electron and ion beams can be investigated under the influence of external electromagnetic fields and the self-fields of charged particles. The influence of the applied voltage, magnetic fields and ionization processes on the beam geometry can be investigated without expensive experiments:

  • Influence of mounting tolerances – How does a tilted cathode affect the geometry of the electron beam?
  • Influence of background pressure – What happens when the electron beam crosses regions with different pressures?
  • Effects of the applied potentials and the beam current – How do the potential difference and the current affect the beam geometry and its energy distribution?
  • Influence of the magnetic field – How can the magnetic field be further optimized in order to achieve a focused electron beam at the target?
