“With Wolfgang Lehner, the GI is honoring a researcher who has made a name for himself with a large number of publications at the intersection of modern data analysis applications and new hardware technologies, including topics such as query processing across heterogeneous storage systems and the performance optimization of data systems,” the GI acknowledges Wolfgang Lehner\u2019s dedication and achievements in the field of database systems.<\/p>\n
Wolfgang Lehner has held the Chair of Databases at the Faculty of Computer Science at TUD since 2002. He has headed the Institute for System Architecture there since 2006. In addition, he has been a professor at the Data Engineering, Science and Systems Group at Aalborg University in Denmark since 2024.<\/p>\n
Wolfgang Lehner\u2019s involvement in the national and international scientific community encompasses a wide range of responsibilities: Since 2023, he has been a member of the Scientific Commission of the German Science Council, which advises the federal government and the state governments on all matters concerning the development of science, research, and higher education.<\/p>\n
In the international scientific community, Wolfgang Lehner has played a key role since 2026 as vice president of the nonprofit organization \u201cEndowment of VLDB,\u201d significantly shaping the direction of the world\u2019s largest association in the field of data management.<\/p>\n
At the German Research Foundation (DFG), Wolfgang Lehner served from 2019 to 2024 as a member of the Senate and Grants Committee for Collaborative Research Centers and from 2012 to 2018 as a member of the DFG\u2019s Review Board for Computer Science. Within the German Informatics Society (GI), he provided new impetus from 2002 to 2010 as a member of the leadership of the Database and Information Systems (DBIS) Division, serving as its spokesperson from 2008 to 2010.<\/p>\n
The German Informatics Society (GI) is the largest professional association for computer science in the German-speaking world. Since 1969, it has represented the interests of computer scientists in academia, society, and politics and advocates for digitalization that serves the common good. With 14 divisions, over 30 active regional groups, and countless specialist groups, the GI serves as a platform and voice for all disciplines within computer science.<\/p>\n
