This sense of security is also reflected in the question of why well-known protective measures are not being implemented. 27 percent of respondents cite the fact that they already feel secure as the reason. Others find implementation difficult: 23 percent each say that protective measures are too complicated or that they feel overwhelmed by them. Another 20 percent do not know what to do because, in their view, different recommendations are given everywhere. For companies, this holds an important insight: Cybersecurity does not necessarily fail because risks are completely unknown. Security must also be understandable, easy to implement, and firmly integrated into everyday work.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\">Being aware of something is far from the same as implementing it<\/h3>\n<p>Further results from the Cybersecurity Monitor show just how wide the gap between knowledge and implementation is. Of 19 suggested protective measures, respondents are aware of only 6 on average. On average, only about 4 are actually used.<\/p>\n<p>Even with measures that are known, there is still room for improvement:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>46 percent use secure passwords,<\/li>\n<li>40 percent use up-to-date antivirus software,<\/li>\n<li>40 percent use two-factor authentication,<\/li>\n<li>26 percent have enabled automatic installation of available updates,<\/li>\n<li>and 21 percent use passwordless login, such as with passkeys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These figures relate to personal internet use. Nevertheless, this raises an interesting question for businesses: How many security measures are merely planned within a company, and how many of them are actually implemented consistently? After all, a security policy alone does not prevent an attack. What matters is what is technically enforced and actually put into practice in day-to-day work.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\">Cybersecurity must not depend on individual decisions&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>This is precisely where professional IT security in a company differs from how individuals handle cybersecurity. Ideally, an employee should not have to decide for themselves every day whether their laptop is sufficiently protected or whether an important security update should be installed. Many protective measures can be organized centrally. These include, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>centrally managed updates and patch management,<\/li>\n<li>multi-factor authentication for corporate applications,<\/li>\n<li>defined password and access policies,<\/li>\n<li>endpoint protection and centralized security monitoring,<\/li>\n<li>regulated user and permission management,<\/li>\n<li>regular data backups,<\/li>\n<li>controlled device configurations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The more firmly such measures are embedded in technical and organizational structures, the less security depends on every single employee making the right decision at all times. However, this does not mean that people no longer play a role in cybersecurity. On the contrary.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\">Only 14 percent regularly stay informed about cybersecurity&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>The Cybersecurity Monitor also reveals a clear need for improvement when it comes to information-seeking behavior. Only 14 percent of respondents regularly stay informed about cybersecurity. Forty percent, however, do so from time to time. By contrast, about a quarter\u201424 percent\u2014say they actually never keep themselves informed. It\u2019s also interesting to note that people who have already been affected by cybercrime within the past twelve months tend to keep themselves informed about the topic more frequently. This highlights a well-known problem: Many people pay closer attention to cybersecurity only after something has already happened. For companies, this is precisely what should be avoided. Awareness and security measures should not be prioritized only after a suspicious attachment has been opened, a password compromised, or a system encrypted.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\">Employees need to know what matters&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>Technical safeguards are therefore only one aspect of an effective security strategy.<\/p>\n<p>For example, employees should be able to recognize:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When is an email suspicious?<\/li>\n<li>How can I tell if a login prompt is unusual?<\/li>\n<li>How do I handle unexpected MFA requests?<\/li>\n<li>What should I do if I think I\u2019ve clicked on a phishing link?<\/li>\n<li>Who can I contact within the company?<\/li>\n<li>What should I absolutely avoid trying on my own in the event of a security incident?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The goal here isn\u2019t to turn every employee into an IT security expert. Far more important are simple rules, clear points of contact, and regular awareness campaigns. The Cybersecurity Monitor also shows that people are primarily looking for concrete guidance: For those seeking information, tips for dealing with emergencies are particularly relevant, followed by warning signs of cybercrime and instructions for preventive security measures. This principle applies very well to companies: Employees need not only theoretical knowledge about cyber threats but also concrete steps they can take.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\">Cybercrime is not a theoretical risk&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>This high subjective sense of security also contrasts with another finding. 11 percent of respondents report having been affected by cybercrime within the past twelve months. Overall, 27 percent report having experienced cybercrime at least once. Among those affected within the past twelve months, incidents cited included unauthorized access to online accounts and phishing. And a successful attack often has consequences. Among those surveyed who were affected, 88 percent suffered some form of damage. The damages cited included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>financial losses,<\/li>\n<li>loss of trust in the relevant online services,<\/li>\n<li>loss of time,<\/li>\n<li>and data loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Due to the comparatively small number of cases regarding this question, the BSI expressly points out that changes from one year to the next should be understood only as rough indicators. These damage figures cannot be directly applied to businesses either. However, the basic categories of damage are well known: A security incident can not only have financial consequences but also consume time, jeopardize data, and damage trust.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\">From a Sense of Security to Actual Security&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>The Cybersecurity Monitor 2026 makes one thing very clear: Feeling secure is not the same as being secure. For companies, cybersecurity should therefore depend as little as possible on the subjective sense of security of individual people. Instead, it requires a combination of several levels:<\/p>\n<p>Technology: Systems, end devices, and accounts must be protected with appropriate security measures.<br \/>Processes: Updates, access rights, backups, and the handling of security incidents require clear procedures and responsibilities.<br \/>People: Employees should be able to identify risks and know how to respond in an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Above all, however, these three areas should be reviewed regularly. After all, a security measure implemented two years ago is not necessarily sufficient today.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\">How well does cybersecurity really work in your company?<\/h3>\n<p>The crucial question is therefore not, \u201cDo we have IT security measures in place?\u201d but rather, \u201cDo our security measures work in day-to-day operations?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Are all devices up to date with the latest updates? Is multi-factor authentication consistently implemented? Are access rights reviewed regularly? Can backups actually be restored? Do employees know what to do if they receive a suspicious message? It is precisely these kinds of questions that help turn a sense of security into actual cybersecurity. After all, protection doesn\u2019t come from simply listing as many security measures as possible.
