The IT world loves well-designed technology stacks, and for good reason. A stack describes a collection of components that work together seamlessly, with each layer building on the one below it to provide complete solutions. As cloud infrastructures and digital services become increasingly complex and the number of available technologies, platforms, standards, and providers continues to grow, selecting the right combination has become a challenge in itself. That\u2019s why curated technology ecosystems (such as the Deutschland-Stack Initiative) are currently attracting a lot of attention: they help structure complexity and provide guidance in building reliable digital solutions.<\/p>\n
However, a technology stack consists of far more than just its technical components. Behind every technology, every application, and every infrastructure layer are people and organizations that develop, integrate, and operate these solutions. This is exactly where the Saxony Stack comes in.<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s start with what it is not: it is not a new standard that competes with existing ones, nor is it a new specification, nor is it an attempt to reinvent already established technologies.<\/p>\n
Instead, the Sachsen-Stack encompasses the technologies, products, expertise, and offerings of Saxon companies that, together, cover a surprisingly large portion of a modern, sovereign digital infrastructure\u2014from hardware to cloud infrastructure and cloud platforms, all the way to applications, cybersecurity, consulting, and operations. It demonstrates the contribution Saxony is already making to digital infrastructure today and serves as a reminder that innovation doesn\u2019t just emerge at the headquarters of international hyperscalers or global tech hubs. But just as much in Dresden, Leipzig, or Chemnitz\u2014the very region that has given the world, among other things, toothpaste, the coffee filter, milk chocolate, and the bra.<\/p>\n
In other words: The Saxony Stack is not an abstract concept on a presentation slide, but a collection of real-world solutions already in use by companies and public institutions. It has emerged organically from the research, development, and product work of highly competent, experienced, and closely collaborating companies in Saxony. These companies have since joined forces in the Saxony Digital Economy Association to raise awareness of the strength of Saxony\u2019s digital technologies and their potential for public institutions and businesses.<\/p>\n
Initially, the association simply gave a name to an already existing phenomenon. Originally introduced as a working term for the joint service portfolio, the term \u201cSaxony Stack\u201d has since become established and is used by the association and its members to highlight the region\u2019s technological capabilities.<\/p>\n
As a founding member, Cloud&Heat Technologies contributes its own building block to this regional stack: energy-efficient data center infrastructure, open-source-based cloud services, and appliances for on-premises environments, as well as the operational and development expertise needed to reliably deliver these solutions. This is one example of what the Saxony Stack looks like in practice, but it\u2019s by no means the only one.<\/p>\n
When a new initiative is introduced, the first reaction is often: \u201cAnother stack? Do we really need it?\u201d<\/p>\n
In the case of the Saxony Stack, the answer is: no, it is not a competing architecture. The Sachsen Stack explicitly does not see itself as an alternative to initiatives such as the Deutschland Stack. The relationship between the two concepts is complementary, not competitive.<\/p>\n
The Deutschland Stack creates the common foundation for digital solutions in Germany: a framework of interoperable, sovereign, and open building blocks and standards. The Saxony Stack, on the other hand, highlights the companies, expertise, and products that are already providing these building blocks today. In other words: The Germany Stack describes the architecture; the Saxony Stack showcases the ecosystem that builds it.<\/p>\n
This distinction is crucial. After all, a stack consists not only of technology but also requires organizations to develop, integrate, and operate it. Many companies in Saxony are active precisely in these areas. Their solutions are already an excellent fit for key components of the Germany Stack\u2014especially at the infrastructure level. Open-source technologies such as OpenStack and Kubernetes, as well as standards like the Sovereign Cloud Stack (SCS), already form the foundation for offerings that are part of the Saxony Stack.<\/p>\n
The truly interesting insight, therefore, is not that Saxony has created an alternative stack. Rather, it shows that many of the building blocks for a sovereign digital infrastructure are already in place: cloud infrastructure and open-source expertise, identity and security solutions, automation, network and storage technologies, hardware, training programs, AI platforms, as well as consulting and operational services. The Saxony Stack merely makes this ecosystem visible and facilitates its interconnection.<\/p>\n
Digital sovereignty is often discussed as if it began with complex architectural diagrams. In reality, however, it depends on something far more tangible: on people who can develop and operate systems, on companies that invest in future-proof technologies, on teams that enter into support contracts, and on those who reliably deliver these services.<\/p>\n
Saxony boasts a remarkably high concentration of precisely these expertise areas, even if they do not always receive the attention they deserve: cloud providers, application developers, system integrators, open-source contributors, research institutions, and consulting firms work closely together here. Some develop infrastructure, others platforms or applications. Together, they ensure that digital infrastructures function reliably\u2014even on Monday mornings.<\/p>\n
There is also another advantage that is hardly visible in architectural diagrams: geographical proximity. In a regional ecosystem, partners know each other, projects find suitable suppliers more quickly, and ideas are more easily transformed into marketable products. Regionality does not automatically solve technical challenges\u2014but when expertise is geographically concentrated, collaboration becomes significantly easier.<\/p>\n
Giving an existing ecosystem a name was only the first step. The Saxony Digital Economy Business Association is now working to promote the use of the Sachsen-Stack both within Saxony and beyond.<\/p>\n
In early July, the association hosted a kick-off workshop in Leipzig. There, use cases involving national and regional public institutions were presented to a select group of regional organizations, and ideas for further flagship projects were discussed.<\/p>\n
The goal is not only greater visibility but, above all, better networking: Public institutions and companies should be able to more easily find the right combination of Saxon providers to meet their individual needs. At the same time, companies should be able to recognize how their own offerings complement one another in a meaningful way. The association is consistently pursuing this path. In addition to joint appearances at several upcoming events, it is also planning its own conference for early October.<\/p>\n
The Saxony Stack didn\u2019t need to be reinvented. It simply needed a name, to be made visible, and to be interconnected. This is precisely the work that has now begun.<\/p>\n
