Hamburg, April 20, 2026.<\/b> With today’s launch of the Northern Chip Network e.V. (NCN) at DESY in Hamburg, a new voice for microelectronics in northern Germany is being formed. Companies, universities, research institutions and innovation partners from Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein are pooling their expertise to strengthen exchange, initiate cooperation and further expand the competitiveness, innovative strength and visibility of the location.<\/p>\n

Northern Germany has outstanding expertise along the entire microelectronics value chain – from university teaching and basic research to process, product and technology development and industrial semiconductor manufacturing. It is precisely this professional diversity that is reflected in the membership of the young network. At the start, global industrial companies such as Nexperia, NXP Semiconductors, SemikronDanfoss, Vishay Siliconix Itzehoe GmbH and X-FAB MEMS Foundry Itzehoe are members of the NCN. In addition, there are renowned research partners such as the German Electron Synchrotron DESY and the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology (ISIT), universities such as Kiel University (CAU), Kiel University of Applied Sciences (HAW) and Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH); as well as important regional innovation and sustainability partners such as the Itzehoe Innovation Center (IZET), the Renewable Energy Hamburg Cluster (EEHH) and the Society for Energy & Climate Protection Schleswig-Holstein (EKSH).<\/p>\n

The network aims to bring existing strengths in research, teaching and industry closer together. The aim is to bring players in the region into a structured exchange, facilitate the transfer of knowledge, develop joint perspectives for the further development of the microelectronics location and communicate the strengths and common concerns of the location more clearly to the outside world. <\/p>\n

Microelectronics is a key technology for numerous industrial and social challenges. Whether energy supply, automation, mobility or digitalization: progress in many areas requires powerful, reliable and efficient semiconductor solutions. At the same time, the demands on innovation speed, securing skilled workers, technological resilience and the close integration of research and application are also increasing. The Northern Chip Network aims to make a contribution here by making expertise more visible, bringing players together and positioning northern Germany more strongly as a cohesive ecosystem, says Dr. Stephan Marauska, Northern Chip Network board member and Managing Director at Vishay Siliconix Itzehoe. “Our aim is to promote exchange, advance common topics and thus provide new impetus for microelectronics in northern Germany.” <\/p>\n

The official launch of the network takes place today at the NCN launch event at DESY in Hamburg. Julia Carstens, State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Labor, Technology and Tourism of the State of Schleswig-Holstein, will also be present and said in her opening speech: “I am delighted that the official launch of the NCN will now make the outstanding microelectronics expertise and activities in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein more visible. This cooperation between industry, research and politics is fundamental for sustainable innovation and economic strength in our region. Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg benefit equally from strong networks and bold ideas. And events like this show the potential that lies in exchange and joint projects.” <\/p>\n

Prof. Dr. Beate Heinemann, Chairwoman of the DESY Board of Directors, emphasizes: “Northern Germany has enormous potential in the field of microelectronics – from high-performance research facilities to innovative companies. With its unique analytical facilities for power electronics, DESY offers a wide range of approaches for research and development issues, from understanding materials science to chip design. With the Northern Chip Network, we are creating a platform on which the expertise of the various members can be networked and mutually reinforced.” <\/p>\n

Aylin Behrendt-Bicakci, Professor of Packaging and Interconnection Technologies in Mechatronics at HAW Kiel and member of the NCN board, explains: “For the microelectronics of the future, we need close links between research, teaching and industry. Only if we combine knowledge and practical experience will innovations emerge that will also be successful in application. The Northern Chip Network offers the ideal basis for this – it brings together the right partners to quickly transform ideas into marketable solutions and actively involve the next generation.” <\/p>\n

The launch event brings together representatives from industry, science, universities and politics with the aim of strengthening contacts, publicizing the expertise of the individual partners in the network and thus providing initial starting points for cooperation and projects. <\/p>\n

As an open network, the Northern Chip Network invites other interested companies, universities, research institutions and regional players to get involved in future work.  <\/p>\n
