The collaboration led to the development of a first high-performance MicroLED backplane tailored to the unique requirements of specific Vuzix customers. The first working samples tested with OLED technology confirm the design’s potential for advanced display applications. The CMOS backplane supports 1080P+ resolution, enabling both monochrome and full-color, micrometer-sized MicroLED arrays. This development was mainly funded by third-party customers of Vuzix with specific applications. This next-generation MicroLED backplane is primarily focused on high-end enterprise and defense markets where performance and customized solutions are critical.<\/p>\n

“The success of these first functional samples is a major step forward,” said Adam Bull, Director of Program Management at Vuzix. “Fraunhofer IPMS has been an outstanding partner here and we are excited about the potential applications in our OEM solutions and custom projects for our customers.”<\/p>\n

Philipp Wartenberg, Head of IC and System Design at Fraunhofer IPMS, adds: “Working with Vuzix on this groundbreaking project underscores our commitment to advancing display technology through innovative processes and optimized designs. This project demonstrates for the first time the adaptation of an existing OLED microdisplay backplane to the requirements of a high-current MicroLED frontplane and enables us to expand our backplane portfolio.”<\/p>\n
