Chip designers are among the most sought-after specialists in the semiconductor industry worldwide. They develop the functions of new microchips by defining a circuit diagram and layout with the support of EDA software. These experts are also increasingly in demand in Saxony’s microelectronics companies.<\/b> <\/p>\n

The Silicon Saxony university group therefore came up with the idea of making this job profile better known at Saxon colleges and universities in order to motivate students to focus on this area when choosing their major.<\/p>\n

One profession – many paths<\/b><\/p>\n

There are various ways to become a chip designer in Saxony, e.g. studying electrical engineering, microelectronics, information systems technology or physics. The English-language Master’s degree course in Nanoelectronic Systems from Prof. Dr. Thomas Mikolajick, member of the Silicon Saxony e.V. advisory board, also includes the topic of chip design. <\/p>\n

The path to the lecture series<\/b><\/p>\n

In consultation with him, representatives of the university group and the IC Design working group developed the concept for a lecture series, which was offered for the first time at TU Dresden in the summer semester of 2023. <\/p>\n

Employees from a total of 12 Silicon Saxony member companies gave lectures in English on the “Requirements and methodologies for design of integrated circuits from industrial production perspective”.<\/p>\n

The lecture series provided an overview of the entire life cycle of an integrated circuit: from the initial idea, the system and circuit design phase, prototype evaluation and test development to ramp-up and application support. In addition, the special requirements for integrated circuits for the automotive industry were examined, such as thorough methods for verification, reliability and functional safety.<\/p>\n

The team<\/b><\/p>\n

The project was coordinated by Dr. Achim Graupner from Bosch Sensortec GmbH, head of the IC Design working group.<\/p>\n

Feedback and results<\/b><\/p>\n

The students gave particularly positive feedback on the fact that the lecture series presented relevant topics from industry that are not part of the curriculum.  Seven students took an exam at the end of the lecture series. <\/p>\n

The members of the IC Design working group have agreed that they will offer the format again next year and are hoping for an even greater response from students.<\/p>\n
