A research team from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the University of Salerno in Italy has discovered that thin films of elemental bismuth exhibit the so-called nonlinear Hall effect. This effect could be significant in technologies for the controlled use of terahertz high-frequency signals on electronic chips. As the team reports in Nature Electronics (DOI: 10.1038\/s41928-024-01118-y), bismuth combines several advantageous properties that have not yet been found in this combination in other systems. What is particularly remarkable is that the quantum effect is even observed at room temperature. The thin films can also be applied to plastic substrates and could therefore be considered for modern high-frequency technology applications.","thumbnail_url":"https:\/\/cdn.pblzr.de\/dacbb27c-1270-4041-b681-e2b95f06f8a1\/2024\/02\/hzdr-logo-400x300_1_TEXT.jpg"}
