Skyrmions are microscopic magnetic vortices that can form in certain materials and were first detected in 2009. They are interesting because they could be used for new forms of data storage. The theory had also predicted the existence of so-called antiskyrmions, which were eventually discovered ten years after the skyrmions. Researchers from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden and the University of South Florida got to the bottom of the origin of this complex phenomenon using ion beam saws and sophisticated measurement techniques, as they report in the journal Communications Materials (DOI: 10.1038\/s43246-022-00323-6).","thumbnail_url":"https:\/\/cdn.pblzr.de\/dacbb27c-1270-4041-b681-e2b95f06f8a1\/2023\/07\/hzdr-logo-400x300_1_TEXT.jpg"}
